Behold, the Burger Taco is Born

burger-tac0-all-americanNo, not the “Taco Burger.” Putting monterry jack cheese, salsa, and jalapenos on a hamburger has been done in even the worst greasy spoon diners the world over. No, friends, we are talking about a different kind of taco/hamburger hybrid.

Behold, the Burger Taco, now available from Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill, on the West Coast. From Ralph Rubio, the founder:

“I’ve always wanted to blend the cultural tastes of Mexico with those of the U.S.A., and I think this new All-American Taco is better than either on its own,” said Ralph Rubio, the chain’s co-founder and chairman. “We looked beyond the expected to introduce something totally unique, and, with one bite, the All-American Taco brings fond memories of the local beach drive-in and a trip to Cabo, all at once.”

Rubio’s All-American Taco features a seasoned char-grilled beef patty topped with melted American cheese, salsa fresca, a smoky garlic-chipotle mayonnaise and lettuce, wrapped in a warm flour tortilla with jalapeno pepper on the side, and is priced at $2.99.

It’s been a while since we’ve visited the Los Angeles area, but apparently “hybrid” tacos are all the rage. “Korean” tacos have been gaining in popularity (Asian spice-marinated meat, spiked with kimchee), as well as “Chinese” tacos, which are simply late night Chinese take out staples, like kung pao chicken, wrapped in a tortilla.

I suppose the “Burger Taco” is a little bit gross in its excess, but overall, I support this kind of hybrid-food innovation. And it’s hard to beat such a pile of food for $2.99 . What’s the verdict…has anyone tried one?
