If you remember anything from your college days, you may recall the unique drunkenness that emerges from eating an entire vodka-infused watermelon. Long a favorite of summer cookouts, the old recipe (drill hole in watermelon>invert bottle of vodka>wait) may not cut it for your more sophisticated soirees. We’re not sure our dumbed-down spin on Chow’s “adult version” is any better, and it may still have to be served alongside Jello shots (which, of course, you’re drinking entirely out of nostalgia), but one thing is for certain: this dish is a wonderful addition to a Fourth of July barbecue.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup vanilla-flavored vodka
  • 1/4 cup Chambord, or other raspberry-flavored liqueur
  • 1 (7-pound) seedless watermelon, peeled and diced large

Method:

Combine all ingredients and toss to coat watermelon. Let soak at room temperature for about 30 minutes, tossing occasionally. Pour off excess liquid (instant watermelon martinis!), arrange chunks on baking sheet, and freeze until frozen, about four hours. Serve, and be careful.

Do you know what else is fantastic about watermelon? It’s an excellent source of iron! In fact, watermelon packs a better iron punch than spinach. So you can have the perfect union – booze AND vitamins!
